
Exploring the Attributes of God
“What is God like?”
This simple question has drawn the hearts of believers and seekers alike for centuries. Knowing who God is shapes how we live, love, and hope. It grounds our faith in something unshakable and invites us into a deeper relationship with the Creator of all things.
The Bible describes God’s nature through various attributes… qualities that describe His character and essence. As we explore some of these attributes, we’ll see a God who is holy, loving, all-knowing, all-powerful, and faithful. Each one invites us to worship Him more fully and trust Him more deeply.
God is Holy
The Bible declares God’s holiness as one of His most fundamental attributes. To be holy means to be perfectly pure, set apart, and morally flawless. In Isaiah 6:3, the seraphim proclaim…
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
This triple repetition emphasizes the absolute purity and majesty of God’s nature.
Holiness means God is completely separate from sin and evil. Yet, His holiness is not distant or detached; it is a call to us. In 1 Peter 1:16, God commands, “Be holy, because I am holy.” This invitation challenges us to live lives that reflect His purity and goodness.
God’s holiness also inspires awe and reverence. When we recognize how perfect He is, we become aware of our own shortcomings and need for grace. Yet, it’s in that awareness that we encounter God’s mercy… because His holiness does not reject us but invites us into transformation.
God is Love
Perhaps the most comforting and life-changing attribute is that God is love. 1 John 4:8 states plainly, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Love is not just something He does; it is what God is like at His very core.
God’s love is unconditional and sacrificial. John 3:16 reminds us…
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
This love is not based on our merit or performance—it is a gift freely given.
Knowing God is love changes how we view ourselves and others. It calls us to love as He loves, with patience, kindness, and forgiveness. When we grasp the depth of God’s love, it becomes a source of healing, hope, and courage in the face of life’s challenges.
God is Omniscient (All-Knowing)
God’s knowledge is beyond anything we can fully comprehend. Psalm 147:5 declares…
“Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.”
God knows everything. The past, present, future, and even the thoughts of our hearts.
This omniscience can be a profound comfort. It means God understands our struggles before we even speak them. He knows our fears, our hopes, and our needs intimately. Nothing about our lives is hidden from Him.
This attribute also challenges us to trust God more deeply. When we face uncertainty or confusion, we can rest in the assurance that God has perfect wisdom and insight. He sees the bigger picture even when we don’t.
God is Omnipotent (All-Powerful)
God’s power is limitless. In Jeremiah 32:17, the prophet wrote…
“Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth
by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.”
This is the God who spoke the universe into existence and sustains all things by His mighty hand.
God’s omnipotence means He is able to do all things according to His will. He governs the cosmos, controls history, and holds our lives in His hands. This power is not arbitrary but perfectly aligned with His holiness and love.
When life feels overwhelming, remembering God’s power brings hope. No problem is too big, no situation too complicated for Him. We can approach Him with confidence, knowing that the Creator of all is also our refuge and strength.
God is Faithful
God’s faithfulness is a bedrock truth for believers. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Day after day, God remains steadfast in His promises and love.
This faithfulness means that God never changes His mind or breaks His promises. When we feel abandoned or uncertain, God’s unchanging nature assures us that He is always with us. His promises to provide, protect, and guide are trustworthy.
God’s faithfulness encourages perseverance. It reminds us that no matter how many times we falter, God’s mercy is available. His faithfulness is a source of hope that sustains us through trials and seasons of doubt.
God’s Nature
So, what is God like? He is holy, calling us to purity and reverence. He is love, inviting us into an unbreakable relationship. He is all-knowing, comforting us with perfect understanding. He is all-powerful, giving us hope beyond our circumstances. And He is faithful, promising to never leave us or forsake us.
These attributes paint a picture of a God who is both majestic and deeply personal. As we meditate on who God is, we grow in worship, trust, and love. I encourage you to spend time reflecting on these truths and allow them to transform how you see God… and yourself.
“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
