About this time last year we ran a series on making a book cover and talked about how we created the covers for Elaine Marie Cooper’s Deer Run trilogy.
Today, we’re thrilled to show off the cover of the final book in the series, Legacy of Deer Run, and want to share with you the same kind of story.
A big thanks to Elaine Marie Cooper for making this all happen. With her love of history, she knew the perfect historical setting, the right costumer to sew the dress, and the model. And amazingly made it all happen despite a painful knee and facing knee surgery two days after the photo shoot.
Long before the shoot, Elaine met with Laura Poresky, Period Clothing Supervisor for Living History Farms in Iowa, and gave her instructions on what kind of dress was needed. Laura then sewed a dress in the basic style of the 1800s: Empire waist.

The day of the photo shoot, but before heading to the location, our model met with a professional makeup artist who did her makeup and gave her an 1800s hairstyle. Elaine told the stylist to “think Kate Winslet in Sense and Sensibility.”
She did an awesome job, don’t you think?
After the hair style came the makeup.
Of course, we can’t leave out photographer Leah Fry of Sentimental Soul Photography! She took one wonderful picture after another—making it so hard for us to decide on which was the best one. During the shoot Elaine joked with the model about “getting in touch with her inner Jane Austen.” And she really seemed to!
And it all came together to give us…

ABOUT LEGACY OF DEER RUN
The year is 1800 and young Daniel Lowe forges weapons for the defense of America, still a fledgling nation. He also protects his heart from the allure of Susannah Dobbins who seems so far above his station in life he cannot win her.
Susannah fights her own battle against loneliness and grief. Despite her finery and airs, she is drawn to the young armory worker, who is distant yet disarming.
But the nation’s enemies are afoot, and Daniel finds himself in the crosshairs. Who are these enemies? When and where will they strike? And who will survive their terrorism?
In this final book of the Deer Run saga, Elaine Marie Cooper brings the tale of the Lowe family to a gripping conclusion.
