Unpacking More of God’s Nature Through His Attributes

When we ask, “What is God like?” we’re inviting ourselves into a journey… one that leads us beyond simple answers and into the heart of who God truly is.

The Bible doesn’t leave us guessing. It reveals God’s nature clearly and beautifully through His attributes. These aren’t just abstract qualities. They’re living truths that shape how we experience and relate to Him every day.

We started last week, exploring some of God’s attributes. This week we’re looking at some that may surprise you… attributes that show God’s character in ways that feel both awe-inspiring and deeply personal.

God is Just

First, God is absolutely just. This means He is perfectly fair and righteous in all His decisions. Psalm 89:14 says…

God’s justice ensures that wrong is righted, and evil does not go unnoticed.

This attribute reminds us that God cares deeply about right and wrong, and that His judgments are fair and true. It’s a powerful assurance for those who have been wronged or hurt, knowing that God will bring justice in His perfect timing.

God is Merciful

Alongside His justice, God is also overflowing with mercy. Mercy means God withholds the punishment we deserve and instead offers compassion and forgiveness. Lamentations 3:22 tells us…

God’s mercy is a lifeline. It means no mistake, no failure, and no sin is too great to keep us from His grace. When we understand God’s mercy, it becomes easier to forgive ourselves and others, reflecting His heart in our daily lives.

God is Immutable (Unchanging)

God never changes. The prophet Malachi wrote…

This one of God’s attribute is profound because it means His character, promises, and love are consistent through all time and circumstances.

In a world where everything around us shifts and evolves, God offers a steady anchor. His unchanging nature is a source of comfort and strength, reminding us that we can rely on Him no matter what life throws our way.

God is Sovereign

God’s sovereignty means He is in complete control over all things. Proverbs 19:21 says…

Nothing escapes God’s authority or knowledge.

This attribute encourages us to surrender our worries and plans because God’s purposes are perfect and will ultimately prevail. It invites us to trust His timing and wisdom, even when things feel uncertain or confusing.

God is Compassionate

We often think of God’s might and majesty, but God is also tenderhearted and compassionate. Psalm 145:8 describes Him as…

God’s compassion means He deeply cares for our struggles and pain. He is not a distant deity but a loving Father who feels our hurts and walks alongside us. This attribute invites us to come to Him with all our burdens, knowing He understands and cares.

So, who is God?

He is just, ensuring fairness and righteousness. He is merciful, offering forgiveness and grace beyond what we deserve. He is immutable, a constant in a changing world. He is sovereign, ruling over all with perfect wisdom. And He is compassionate, tenderly caring for each of us.

These attributes reveal a God who is both majestic and intimate…worthy of our awe and trust, and close enough to hold our hearts. When we grasp who God is, we find a foundation for life that nothing can shake.

If you’re wondering “What is God like,” look no further than Scripture. God’s nature is revealed in His actions, His promises, and His unchanging character. Let these truths draw you closer and inspire your faith each day.
